The Commander core has the ability to communicate over a serial communication interface using an ASCII protocol. Various serial interfaces can be used, depending on the specifications of the breakout board. 

The CMD-4EX-SA has the ability to communicate over a RS-485 serial communication interface with the motion core using an ASCII protocol.  This allows for a simple, half-duplex, bi-direction multi-drop network using a single twisted pair.
