Differential encoders. Typical 5 V RS-422 line drivers meet the input threshold when a 120 Ω termination resistor is fitted across each differential pair. None is fitted on the board, so fit the resistor externally — at the controller end of the cable — for cable runs of more than about a metre or at high count rates.
Single-ended encoders. Single-ended encoders are supported. Connect the signal to the inverting input (A−, B−, Z−) and leave the non-inverting input (A+, B+, Z+) unconnected. Note that this reverses the counting direction; invert it in software if required. Keep the single-ended high level within 0 to 4.0 V — 3.3 V logic or open-collector outputs are recommended.
